For colder seasons designers normally prefer using neutral or reserved colors like black, brown, navy, cream, dark violet, etc. However, Fall/ Winter 2011/ 2012 collections abound in brighter hues like crimson, neon orange, purple, sky blue and others. Besides, these eye-popping tones can come in daring combinations.
There was an exceptionally exciting variety on the runways for spring. Many shows opened with white suits, but just as many followed up with rich, saturated color. There was just as much embellishment (graphic floral prints, rich Chinese silk) as there was restraint. Inspiration came from punks (Balenciaga) and ballerinas (Chloé). Here’s some glimpses of trends from the Spring 2011 shows.
Blue Camel
Trend over the past year, the palette beige / caramel will continue to squat on our wardrobes next winter. To avoid getting tired, it adopts blazer over a shirt washed as in Paul Smith .
Fashion week saw every catwalk host a variety of designers with a detail in common: Fraying. Each designer put their own spin on this season’s trend and some even made the most of it by creating frayed accessories.
Chanel added fraying to designer favourite tweed and complimented the collection with the colour choice of pastel shades, whilst Nina Ricci embraced both fraying and colour trends with bright hues and feathered fringing. Versace and Gucci used metallics to enhance the trend with gold and bronze tassels and Holly Fulton combined bright and bold prints with sleek fraying.
Instead of feeling nostalgic, we’re a little abuzz of how fashion friendly students are in 2010. What happened to the days of sweatpants and sneakers? We’re kind of wondering if we can get some photo updates of these in the middle of midterms.
The brilliant thing about the done-up collar as a 2010 fashion trend is that it’s simple, requires nothing all that new and it’s trans-seasonal: start wearing it in Summer 2010 and carry it through to Fall 2010.

Dungarees are back this season and can be utilised in outfits better than ever. With a large range of military and worker wear items becoming popular at the tail end of last year, it was a natural progression for the revival of the dungarees. Denim is also a massive trend this year with everything from shorts, skirts, new jean cuts and playsuits etc. being revitalised and pushed so these are right on trend.
